L-arginine and sex

L-Arginine is an essential amino acid, one of the building blocks of protein in the body. "Essential" refers to the fact that the body cannot manufacture L-Arginine from other substances the way it does with some (nonessential) amino acids. To maintain your supply of this nutrient it is essential that you either consume foods containing L-Arginine (eg, dairy products, nuts, chicken, turkey, and other fowl) or take L-arginine supplements.

Until about a decade ago, L-Arginine was largely ignored except in its very limited protein - building role. Now it turns out, L-arginine is the main source of the primary molecule responsible for sexual arousal. It is interesting to note, however, that even back in the Dark Ages of the 19th century, people like Dr. Kellogg recognized the prosexual value of "nitrogenous elements of food," of which, it turns out L-arginine is a major contributor.

The modern awakening in L-Arginine use has come in three major waves. The first wave hit in the mid 1980's when Durk Pearson and Sandy Shae popularized research showing that dietary L-Arginine acts to release growth hormone (GH) from the pituitary gland at the base of the brain [Pearson, 1982; Merimee, 1969]. Injections of GH have been shown to have dramatic anti-aging effects in older people, including increases in bone and muscle mass, decreases in fat, and improvements in skin tone [Rudman, 1990]. It seemed reasonable to assume that, since L-arginine induces a substantial natural release of GH [Knopf, 1965], it could have beneficial effects similar to those attributed to GH injections. The wide spread successful use of supplements of L-arginine and other GH releasers by body builders and other athletes testifies to the power of this amino acid.

A second wave of L-Arginine research that hit in the late 1980's demonstrated that L-arginine supplements significantly improve immune function [Barbul, 1990] and speed wound healing [Daley, 1988], also through the release of GH. Based on the remarkable recovery of seriously ill surgical patents taking L-Arginine supplements, one prominent surgeon stated, "Arginine is an important dietary variable that could influence resistance to infection, especially those intracellular variety, as well as tumor growth and the development of metastasis" [Alexander, 1990].

Enhanced libido

Both men and women have remarked about the way L-arginine seems to increase their libido, or desire for sex. Exclaimed one 21 year old woman when asked about L-Arginine, "My god, that stuff! I had to stop taking it. I was doing every guy that came along!" While her reaction may have been a little extreme, some women have been reported to have given L-arginine to their husbands who had lost interest in sex and soon found that they had a rearoused mate on their hands.

How does L-arginine work?

The prosexual effects of L-arginine are directly related to its ability to generate NO[Palmer, 1988] NO molecules are produced on demand inside generator cells, such as the endothelial cells that line the insides of the artery walls. An NO molecule is generated when an enzyme called NO syntase (NOS), which is abundant in these cells, strips away a nitrogen atom (N) from a passing L-arginine molecule and combines it with an oxygen atom(O).

Since NO molecules have a very brief life span (their half-life is only about 5 seconds), their site of activity has to be very close to home. NO formed in arterial endothelial cells passes directly into immediately adjacent smooth muscle cells that surround the artery. This causes them to relax and leads to a reduction in blood pressure. A constant seepage of NO molecules is now indemnified as being crucial for controlling blood pressure [Anggard, 1994]. The more NO that is present, the lower the blood pressure, and vice versa.

Prosexual nutrients

When people have hypertension (high blood pressure) because their arterial endothelial cells are damaged and cannot make NO (a common finding in cardiovascular disease), their blood pressure drops after they receive an intravenous infusion of L-arginine [Drexler, 1991].

Dr. Salvador Moncada, research director at Wellcome Research Laboratories and a leading NO investigator, points out that if you place a drop of NO on the muscles that encircle a blood vessel, they instantly relax, which allows more blood to flow through them. He calls NO a "universal transducer," which is a kind of universal biochemical interpreter that translates Chemical/electrical messages from one form to the other [Kolata, 1991].

How a woman becomes aroused

Stimulation adequate for sexual arousal is controlled by the brain.
Adequate estrogen and testosterone are necessary for the brain to
sense arousal.

Orgasm can only occur from a maximally aroused clitoris.  Arousal is when the clitoris is engorged with blood to cause clitoral enlargement, clitoral rigidity (erection) and clitoral sensitivity.

This all occurs because of the L-Arginine Nitric Oxide System, awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology.   This is the same effective system that is the cornerstone of the Sensation™ - Rapturecream, women's formula.
